March 2, 2020 We welcome Post-doc Dr. Randy Long (PhD, UC Santa Barbara) to work on an NSF-funded project investigating the physiological ecology of Eastern Red Cedar, with an eye toward understanding how physiological stresses like frost and drought might influence recent range expansion of the species.

December 10, 2019 Members of the Medeiros Lab attended the
kick-off event for the Cleveland Bio-Science Alliance – a collaboration between
Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo, the Cleveland
Museum of Natural History and Holden Forests & Gardens, to enhance
biological research and graduate education in the greater Cleveland area.

November 20, 2019 We welcome Weijia Xie, PhD student of the
Yunnan Flower Research Institute and Yunnan Agricultural University, to conduct
a one-year visiting scholar position examining the relationship between heat
tolerance and floral traits of Rhododendron growing in the Holden Arboretum
collections.

November 5, 2019 Dr. Medeiros gave a presentation at the
Texas A&M department of Ecology and Ecosystem Science entitled
“Outreach, Alt-Ac and the Leaky Pipeline”.

September 29, 2019 Dr. Medeiros gave a talk at the American
Rhododendron Society Fall Convention in Parksville, British Columbia entitled:
“Drinking the ocean through a straw: Rhododendron strategies for rapid
growth under water limitation.”

September 12, 2019 We welcome High School Student Sara
Ramaiah, who began working in the lab on a project investigating leaf venation
of Rhododendron species and hybrids in the Holden collections.

August 16, 2019 Graduate Student Sharon Danielson presented
a talk at the Ecological Society of America Annual meeting entitled
“Comparative leaf hydraulics in five tree species growing in urban and
rural locations”

July 2019 Dr. Medeiros and collaborators David Ward (Kent
State University), Oscar Rocha (Kent State University), Gil Bohrer (The Ohio
State University) and Sarah Supp (Denison University) received and NSF award
for a project entitled: Scale-dependent processes as the drivers for
understanding range- and niche-expansion in a widespread native species.

May 20, 2019 Welcome summer student interns Madison Metzger
and Raphaella Mascia to our lab! Madison and Raphaella will work with graduate
student Sharon Danielson investigating plant functional traits in urban and
rural plant communities.

January 4, 2018 PhysFest2 is coming to Holden Arboretum
July 15-19, 2018. This event will provide graduate student training in
ecophysiology techniques, create a data set on canopy physiology using the
canopy walk and emergent tower at Holden, and provide training on scientific
communication for the public. For more information check out the PHYSFEST2 website

September 6, 2017 Welcome new graduate student Samia Hamati
to the lab. Ms. Hamati will be jointly advised by Dr. Medeiros and Dr. David
Ward, the KSU Art and Margaret Herrick Endowed Professor of Plant Biology.
Samia will study how environmental factors such as competition for light affect
growth and physiological stress tolerance in the evergreen shrub Juniperus
virginiana
, and how this relates to the recent expansion of the species
range into mid-western grassland ecosystems.

August 3, 2017 A Rhododendron Research Network has been
established in conjunction with the American Rhododendron Society. Dr. Juliana
Medeiros and colleague Dr. Erik Nilsen (Virginia Tech) will lead the network,
which will focus on creating opportunities for international collaborations and
citizen science opportunities in Rhododendron. You can learn more about the
